Character Info

Character's Name: Nero Claudius (Saber)
Character's Canon: Fate/
Character's Age: 30 years old (at the time of her death), approximately 1950+ years old (technically...spiritually...)
Canon Point: Fate/Grand Order, post-Camelot singularity.
Background/History: Nero will remember everything from Fate/Extra (Rin route) and Fate/Grand Order up to the Camelot singularity (the latest story chapter officially released in English at this time), so she will know other servants from Fate/Grand Order that have been released until then, even though she only canonically participates in Septem and E Pluribus Unum.

I tend to default to female Hakuno (protagonist of Fate/Extra) and Ritsuka (protagonist of Fate/Grand Order), or leave the protagonist's gender ambiguous, but am willing to retcon for male Hakuno and Ritsuka too.

Strengths:

Unwavering: From the very moment Nero steps in, it's clear that she holds herself in high esteem. She will not obey any Master she deems not chivalrous. After all, Nero considers herself a blade so elegant that the Muses themselves would sing of her, and she tries to live her life as such. This is a woman who sings her own praises, has come to terms with her life and death, walks the path of a warrior instead of a magus because she preferred to follow in the footsteps of the glorious Roman emperors before her, and faces powerful enemies (including Buddha himself) with little trepidation. Though immensely prideful and stubborn, she is not blind to her flaws and mistakes either. Nero readily admits that she has regrets, that she made mistakes and hurt others during her reign, that she wallowed in luxury while her citizens were the ones who brought her whims to fruition. However, she owns up to them head-on, hesitating little about fixing her own mistakes with her own hands. Nero is almost always incredibly confident in herself, which is exactly what the insecure and lost Master she served in the Moon Holy Grail War needed.

Compassionate: Contrary to history (and sometimes, her own behavior) marking her as a selfish, impetuous tyrant, Nero is surprisingly capable of connecting with and caring for others. When Hakuno needs time to mourn Shinji's death, she reassures them that she understands the need to lament and reminisce. When Robin Hood insults Hakuno by comparing them to a mere hatchling, she proudly proclaims that though they may be a novice and mediocre in both appearance and ability, they will grow into a big, strong bird with her and Hakuno's own efforts...and that they look utterly adorable while trying. Though she strongly desires to be the leading actor, Nero is content to play a supporting role when she wants, whether it is by inviting others to talk out their self-doubt, slipping in words of reassurance, or getting to know others' wishes and ideals. She gives credit where credit is due, and refuses to let others suffer for her own weakness. In short, Nero is not heartless; far from it.

Passionate: When she feels, she throws herself into things with all she has. Though an emperor, she proudly states that she has always been subservient to beauty. Nero considers herself an artist of many talents: a sculptor, an architect, a writer, a painter, a songwriter, and so on. When asked about a work she is particularly fond of, she recounts an entire emotional orgy of a play to Hakuno for more than hour. To her, art is life and communication, for it is how she expressed her feelings (as she admits that she's poor at expressing herself otherwise). In her own words, "While pitiful, ignorance is hardly a sin," and she readily approaches new experiences with a relatively open mind and a willingness to understand (as long as they aren't antagonistic).

Weaknesses:

Imperious: True to historical accounts, Nero is incredibly prideful, arrogant, and domineering. She does not ask for attention and affection so much as demands it, either through her words or actions. She boasts about herself constantly, whether it's about her many "artistic talents" or her combat prowess. A perfectionist at heart, she always gives her all, so she expects similar from others working with her in return. It's only natural that others around her feel blessed by merely being in her presence. It's only natural that an emperor receive tithes for all their work. It's only natural that someone with her talents be recognized as the genius she is. And if others don't? Well, they simply don't recognize genius! Not to mention that her pesky pride gets in the way of admitting when she needs help, cares for someone a great deal, or is vulnerable. Nero Claudius is an emperor, supposed to stand strong against all that would dare to get in her way.

Egocentric: As stated in her interlude, "Nero only knew how to love one way. To demand, give, and burn away... Violently." Though she cared more for nameless Roman citizens than she did her blood relatives, she did not try to understand how the common people loved each other. When she loves, she selfishly expects love in return, as the attention-seeker she is, and when the citizens she loved did not raise a finger to help her, she committed suicide out of grief. Should Nero grow fond of someone, she wants to practically monopolize their affection, and gets irritated/jealous when leniency is bestowed upon someone other than her. (On the flip side, this means she flusters easily under flattery, and lavishes in it.) To her credit, she recognizes that fault (as she does not resent her citizens for her final moments), and is trying to learn from it, but it's still there.

Fiery: Again, when she feels, she feels intensely. She almost killed her friend, Tacitus, in a fit of rage when he admitted that he didn't understand 80% of her art. She genuinely believed that her performances would cheer citizens up after the Great Fire of Rome, but when they started to leave in the middle of her performance, she was offended enough to lock them in from the outside and force them to sit through the entirety. Should someone offend her enough, Nero has no qualms with outright insulting them, likening them to a talking rat or calling them a coward. Underhanded tactics such as hit-and-runs, poisoning, and political backstabbing are things she isn't fond of at all, as she had more than enough of such things in her mortal life, and she makes her displeasure known. Though she is a grown woman, Nero has her moments where she will throw childish tantrums and jabs, especially when she gets defensive, which is relatively easy to do by insinuating less-than-pleasant things about her talents, art, reign, or height.

Powers/Abilities:

Is anyone ever ready for the powers/abilities section for a Nasuverse character?

Servant physiology - As a Servant, a type of mythological or historical figure summoned as a magical familiar, she does not need to eat or sleep or drink in order to sustain herself (although she certainly loves indulging in doing so). She can fight and defeat ghosts/spirits, and pings as a magical being herself. Her strength, speed, and endurance are far more than any normal human being is capable of, able to be tossed into several stone pillars and the like and still come out relatively fine. She can switch between her spiritual form (which allows her to turn invisible and mostly undetectable by enemies, as well as cuts down on mana consumption) and her material form/body.

Swordfighting - She's a Saber, so she's a skilled and agile melee fighter who specializes in using swords. Combined with her Servant physiology, she's no slouch in combat. Though she normally could not qualify as a Saber (and does so mostly because of her Imperial Privilege), and is better suited as a Rider (as she was known for her charioteering), she doesn't like the class, preferring to be summoned as a Saber instead, which she deems the strongest and most elegant of the Servant classes.

Her skillset mainly focuses on hitting things hard, buffing herself so she hits things harder, and a bit of self-healing/endurance so she can survive long enough to hit more things until they're defeated.
  • Rosa Ichthys: Veil of Petals - A sword technique that inflicts physical damage.
  • Très Fontaine Ardent: Fount of the Saint - Strengthens Saber's physical attack. Basically...increases her physical strength.
  • Très Fontaine Claudeo: Fount of the Healer - Absorbs enemy HP when using BREAK. RP-wise, this means that once she activates this skill, her subsequent attacks drain the enemy's life force.
  • Gladiusanus Blauserum: Artillery Applause/Pari Tenu Blauserum: Thunderous Applause - A sword technique that inflicts physical damage.
  • Invictus Spiritus: Thrice-setting Sun - The ability to revive herself if she falls in battle. It must be prepared beforehand and will only bring her back once per activation (meaning in order to use it again she must prepare it once more). It has a cooldown period, so she can't simply use it over and over to constantly avoid dying. As shown in Last Encore, this skill also allows her to stay kicking and fighting despite intentionally bleeding out poison in her body.
  • Très Fontaine Tempestes: Fount of Chronos - A self apply skill that uses 50MP. It inflicts Stun on an enemy when using GUARD. RP-wise, this means that if an enemy attacks while Nero (successfully) guards, the enemy is stunned.
  • Laus Saint Claudius - Technically a Noble Phantasm, Nero unleashes a powerful, fiery sword strike that leaves a trail of petals in its wake.
  • Fax Celestis - Also technically a Noble Phantasm, Nero charges forward with her blade on fire and unleashes a wall of flame afterwards. The wound she leaves will also burn the opponent.
Magecraft - Nero apparently knows a fair bit of magecraft. At least, enough for her to materialize as a Caster and create her own Mystic Code. As a Caster, she primarily just summons apparatus to fire lasers and the like, as she still prefers to use her blade to attack.

Imperial Privilege - Her personal skill. To quote the wiki: "An ability that, due the insistence of the owner, skills that are essentially impossible to possess can be obtained for a short period of time. Skills available included Riding, Swordsmanship, Artistry, Charisma, Military Tactics, etc. With A rank or above, alteration of the corpus (such as Divinity) was possible. The Roman Emperor was no different from Gods. All skills converge at the Emperor. If the Emperor called white black, then it was black. However, even so, one could not acquire skills without basis. Since Saber was a polymath with ample curiosity, she had experience in most of the skills. For example, if Saber decided "I can pilot a jet! It is nothing, just adjust the plane according to altitude, not too different from the jet chariot I invented!" And just like that, she would figure out how to pilot the plane. With her short attention span and headache, she would soon forget what she learned."

I am going to pre-emptively nerf this, because it's a headache to deal with and honestly pretty overpowered. She will not be able to achieve divinity, for one. For another, she will only be able to maintain one skill, not multiple, for up to 3 hours at max. After that, her migraine will kick in and she will forget what she learned.

Aestus Domus Aurea - Her primary Noble Phantasm. To spare you the lorespeak, it's basically a huge magical arena she summons that emulates the Domus Aurea she had built in her mortal life, and influences as the "lead actor". RP-wise, the theater makes it so that her parameters are boosted, her attacks ignore defense (physical and magical), and the opponents caught in it get weaker over time. Since it's locked from the outside, escape is virtually impossible unless one destroys it from the inside or it dematerializes.

Other Noteworthy Traits:

Due to Nero's...artistic sensibilities and passion for the fine arts, she is fairly knowledgeable about many crafts, which include:
  • Architecture
  • Songwriting and regular writing
  • Painting
  • Acting
  • Sewing and tailoring (as a fashionista)
  • Smithing/metalworking (usually for ornaments and the like)
  • Sculpting (from clay to marble and whatnot)
  • Playing instruments
  • Dancing
Her migraine supposedly prevents her from exhibiting her artistic abilities to their fullest glory, most notably singing, but...well, there's a reason her voice does damage in her Caster form.

Weapons & Other Special Inventory:

Inventory on her:
- Aestus Estus, her sword.
- Ball Dress of Rose, her default outfit, complete with ascension outfit additions.
- Her bridal outfit (yes, she apparently simply has outfits she can magically change into on the fly, as shown in CCC)
- Her modern casual outfit
- Her swimsuit Mystic Code...which she's probably never going to use

Extra:
- A framed photo of her and Hakuno.

Color: Red! (#DC2916, the color of her dress.) Just...look at her...everything. Even if her design and moniker as "Red Saber" weren't relevant, red is symbolically connected a lot of things she's also strongly connected to: passion, fire, love, roses, blood, having a hot-headed temperament, and so on.

[ OPTIONAL ] World Aspect:

For settings or event aspects, there might be some fun in playing around with the Fate/ universe's incarnation of Nursery Rhyme, which is a Noble Phantasm/powerful magic that gave itself a Servant form when summoned by a Master. This would basically allow anything and everything from notable fairy tales, including the Jabberwock, or aspects of nursery rhymes in general, like the reversal of time, essentially flipping the pages back to the beginning of the story.

For example, Nursery Rhyme's Nameless Forest will slowly chip away at the target's ego; they can't remember their name, family, relationships, etc. until their body disappears, unless they remember their name.

If that overlaps too much with the setting or doesn't work, there's always the Servant system, in which some characters can be bound to other characters in a magical contract, between Masters and Servants (magical familiars), and one cannot survive or fight without another. Abilities are either bestowed or turned up to 11 in overpowered ways, mundane abilities are warped into reality-warping magic (like Hans Christian Andersen's writing capability becoming the ability to turn his target into their "ideal form" as "leading character"), and characters are given parameters/RPG stats.

(Holy Grail War optional.)
